Trouble Saving new projects

Hello Everyone,

I downloaded 3.7.5 today in order to record some of my old albums for use on my PC and in my car. I was able to record the entire first album but trouble started when I tried to save the project.

I have tried both saving the file and exporting it and get the same error for each. I’ve tried as an aup3 file and also as wav &mp3 with the same result.
I get an error window that says “file not found” check the filename and try again.
I’m sure this must be something simple I am overlooking but right now I am totally confused. Please Help.

Saving in Audacity saves a project file.
Exporting in Audacity saves a music/sound file.
They are not the same, the project file is not a sound file.

Please publish the exact error message. I suspect you do not have write permission for the target. Or you are trying to use a cloud storage. Audacity works best with internal disks.

Hello dear friend,

This error is really annoying, especially when you have just finished recording! Don’t worry, this problem is usually simpler than it seems.

Since both saving the project (.aup3) and exporting (WAV/MP3) encounter the same error, we are almost certain that the problem is not with the recording code itself, but with the access to the save path.

Please check these three things in order, as they will solve the problem 90% of the time:

Run the program as Administrator:

Close the Audacity program.

Right-click on the program icon and select “Run as administrator”.

Now try to save the project again and then export it. This will give the software write access.
Test with a simple path:

Create a new, completely empty folder on the root of the CD or DVD drive (for example, D:\TestSave).
Try saving the output exactly there. If it saves here, the problem is with the path length or characters in your main folder.
Antivirus/Firewall Check:
Temporarily disable your antivirus (like Windows Defender or any other antivirus you have installed) and try again. Sometimes firewalls block unexpected programs (like Audacity) from accessing your hard drive.
If running as administrator doesn’t solve the problem, please let us know so we can look into cache-related solutions.

Good luck!

Well, if (s)he closes Audacity, (s)he no longer can save the project or export the audio. And (s)he nowhere writes anything about CD / DVD. Saving is normaly done on the internal HD / SSD.

Sorry, but your advices are nonsense - try again.

Thank you all for the responses. somehow I got into a folder that required Admin access (by accident) and the alert if I wanted to run as administrator. This corrected the issue.
