Switch tracks while recording

I want to record on two stereo tracks alternately, first just record on one track, then just the other track - and then for certain sections on both tracks. To put it another way, I want to be able to mute the recording on one track, then unmute that track and mute recording on the other track - preferably with a single click or keystroke. Can anyone tell me if this is possible?

Toggling between tracks when playing is possible, (but not while recording)

Thanks Trebor, but I know that. The whole point is I want to switch while recording. I guess it’s just not possible. I’ll have to see if I can find an audio program that does support it.
