Suddenly no audio output via laptop (Mac) or headphones

Yesterday morning I digitized a couple of vinyl lp’s onto my Mac laptop and exported them to my Apple Music library as I’ve been doing for some months now… In the afternoon I digitized another vinyl lp but there was no audio output when I started to edit the recordings. I checked all the OS Sound preferences and all of the Audacity settings I could think of to see if I accidentally flipped a switch somewhere in error - all seemed to be in order. When playing the recordings from Apple Music there was audio output.
I used my desktop Mac (which had audio output) to edit and export to Apple Music these recordings and all worked as expected.
So the problem seems to be associated with the laptop. I have deleted and reinstalled the the Audacity app, tried to record another lp and the lack of audio out continues.

Any ideas as to what I may be overlooking? I’m using the current 3.3 version

It could be your Recording and Playback Levels:

It was the playback level slider - set to 0%. Many thanks!
