Stop playback and cut selected - shortcut

I use Audacity for voiceover editing, i.e. to cut out bad takes.

Currently, if you try to Delete (Del hotkey) a selection while the audio is played, you get a Disallowed error in focus telling you can only do it while the audio is stopped. The Info is selected by default, so if you press enter it will open a whole array of html files over your work.

Okay fine, I assigned S as hotkey for stop, to send both S first then Del to pause any recording while played and cut selection.

But it had the Audacity to outsmart me, as if audio is NOT played, and you try to stop it, you will be presented with another Disallowed error stealing focus.

What is the point of any of those warnings or such behaviour, please?

Could we have an option to just stop playback and cut, maybe on a different shortcut like Ctrl-DEL?

What version of Audacity are you using?

I ask because I can’t reproduce this in 3.7.5.

  • import some audio
  • play
  • click to create the start of the selection (stuff to delete)
  • shift-click to create the selection
  • press the delete key OR press Cmd+K

Nothing happens. The selected audio is not deleted and there is no “disallowed” dialog.

Did you do this with a macro? It is not possible to run a macro while playback is happening, at least in 3.7.5.
