Stereo Mix sound quality degradation

Hello,
I am a long-time audacity user, but 1st time poster. I often record audio via the stereo mix input source, and convert to the highest quality mp3 files (insane preset or highest VBR setting). Recently the recordings (direct Audacity playback) and converted audio files are markedly decreased in sound quality (thin with no dynamics as if listening on a cell phone and is reflected in the visualized waveforms). The sound quality live through the speakers is normal. I believe this is not an Audacity specific issue, as I tested with other audio software and encountered the same results. I am hoping someone in the Audacity community would kindly provide some insight. The only changes to the computer system are windows updates. After researching extensively online, here are the steps I have taken to resolve with no luck:

  1. Uninstall / Reinstall the latest version of Audacity including preferences.
  2. Unistall / Reinstall Realtek drivers (and disable any enhancements and delete any other “audio enhancing” programs such as HP Audio Control).
  3. Download and try other audio software.
  4. Use different Audio and Quallity settings. (MME, WASAPI, loopback, rates and formats)

Please find my system information attached.

Thanks in advance for any advice / suggestions,
Todd

I have an assumption that the problem is really with the Windows update. Try uninstalling the latest update. Or install a virtual cable, there will be no problems with it.

Thanks for your reply. I attemped the virtual audio cable and was indeed able to record high quality audio. I had some issues monitoring it from the speakers during recording however. It appears I stumbled on another fix. Changing the stereo mix properties did not help. However in changing the Realtek speaker properties and unchecking the "enable audio enhancements appears to have corrected the problem. Thanks again for your time!
