Splitting stereo to mono keeps interference on both tracks

I have a stereo track see pic 1. On the top channel there is some noise between 1.2 and 1.5
If I split the track into 2 mono tracks, that noise appears on both see pic 2 in next post.

How can I just remove upper track?

It may just be the way the way the waveform is being rendered: a graphical thing.

e.g. the noise was always on the right channel, it’s being more accurately rendered when split.

Hi
I am a really novice user of Audacity and I only use it for 2 things. Transferring cassette tapes to CD and occasionally changing the pitch of a song or accompaniment.
When I play the original track through itunes its OK but when it goes through Audacity I get that interference at the start and it affects the overall sound. As that interference appeared only in the top track, I thought I could remove just that. But when I split to mono, the interference goes on both tracks! Is there a way of deleting just the top track?

The appearance of the waveform is an approximation: in reality the faint noise may always have been on both tracks, the waveforms are just being rendered differently when split.

Not without splitting.

Why not simply select that portion and either delete it or set its volume to zero?

The whole tune is affected
Shall I send you the original file

I suspect that I don’t understand exactly what you want to achieve. Using the latest released version 3.7.4 I can do the following:-

Click the ellipsis symbol to the right of the track title and select split stereo track. Content of the tracks is not changed just separated.

Select the noise in the appropriate track only and use the generate menu-silence option to remove the noise.

Use make stereo track from the ellipsis menu to recombine.
