Can degrade audio, e.g. using these plugins in Audacity …

Cannot upgrade audio: cannot make a silk purse from a sow’s ear.
Can you explain that again? Are you (simulating) recording with the microphone built-into a smartphone? Or are you recording the sound coming out of a smartphone speaker? Or the sound of monitors plugged-into the phone?
The microphone built into most phones is pretty good so it shouldn’t have any particular sound characteristic (except it’s mono).
Of course, good monitors are pretty good too so in a good room/studio they won’t “change” the sound much.
