SoX - the Swiss Army Knife of sound processing

SoX has been a well known command-line utility for working with audio files, for over 35 years. Here on the Audacity forum there are multiple examples and recipes for batch processing with SoX.

Unfortunately, if you refer to the Wikipedia page one might get the impression that SoX is dead, but this is not the case.

While it is true that the last release of the original SoX project was SoX 14.4.2 back in 2015, it has been continuously maintained and updated by the Linux community and others to the present day.

The King is dead. Long live the King.

In May 2024, a new fork of SoX was created on Codeberg called SoX-NG.

This fork was created to pull together the >50 active SoX projects into one sane project. Since it’s formation, all open security CVEs were fixed, and there have been regular releases - Windows binaries and source code. SoX-NG has now been adopted as the official upstream repository for SoX by many Linux distributions, including Debian and Ubuntu.
