I edit podcasts and decided to try my latest in Audacity 4 beta. Previously I would use the Silence option to highlight a section of audio and silence it out, usually someone coughing, etc. Worked perfect.
Now when I try that, I get a pop up asking to preview the audio and then when I just accept it, it bounces me all the way back to the start of the clip, minutes earlier. I don’t think this is a bug, maybe a new feature? I’m not sure what issue it’s solving but it makes added silence to a section of your audio a pain point.
Anyone seen this/have a work around/can tell me what I’m doing wrong. Previous Audacity worked perfectly. Highlight the section, click silence, area now silent, move on. Appreciate the help/advice.

However …
You are using Effect > Generate Silence, which is different from the old Edit > Remove Special > Silence Audio command.
You can put a Silence button on the top button bar. Click on the GEAR icon at the upper right of the window. Scroll down to see the Silence command the click the “eye” icon beside it to “open” the eye. The button should appear between the Zoom tool and the Time (position) field.
Since there is no equivalent menu command one cannot bind a keystroke to the Silence command, which I find to be a pain.
Ah, thanks!! Certainly possible the jumping to the start of the clip is some sort of user error.
Appreciate the tip on the Generate Silence button, but your right, not being able to link it to a key stinks. That’s been my workflow in the past. That said, this at least keeps me moving forward. Thanks again!
