Samson Q1U Mic not working - help

For over a year I was using a Samson Q1U mic with audacity, no problem, and then it began to malfunction in the following way – it recorded, but very faintly, had to shout into the mic to get anything. I thought it was the mic, and got another. Same problem. Did it on every computer. So, it’s not the computer, it’s not the mic, right? I thought perhaps some virus had infected my version of audacity, and–having just got a new computer–I thought I would start life afresh and download audacity again and plug in one of my two Samson Q1U mics. At first I got an error message from audacity when I plugged in the mic, unfortunatley I don’t remember it, and I no longer get the message – I just get the same performance from the mic I got before. Has this happened to anyone else? Any ideas? Thanks.

Which operating system do you have?

My guess is that you’re on Windows 7 or Vista and that is windows’ “enhancements” for voice conferencing software getting in action…

See if this helps: http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/FAQ:Recording#enhancements

I had different operating systems for different computers, so this problem showed up on XP, Vista and, just now, Windows 7. I haven’t look at your tip yet, but will, thanks.
