Can one remove the instrumental melody from a track just leaving the backing track?
Is it imperative that the original be a stereo track? Please advise. TY.

You can’t take apart a mixed song into instruments and singers. The only tool that comes close is Vocal Removal which sometimes removes the lead singer from a stereo show. You need to start with a very high quality stereo show and the end result is mono karaoke music. All the instruments in the left-right stereo center of the original go, too, not just the voice.
Here’s a short clip from a song that didn’t work very well. After removal and then a little before.
