Remove distortion / cracking voice

I recently recorded a telephone interview for my radio news story, but the recording came out really bad. There is a annoying cracking in the person’s voice, as you can hear from this sample: https://soundcloud.com/pburtsov/example.

Reading other posts in the forum, I am aware that it is impossible to totally remove the distortion. However, I would be really grateful for any tips on how to make it sound less severe.

I can’t do it. The distortion is too close to the voice tones to separate them.

No worries, and thanks for trying!

Any idea why this happened? I don’t think the levels were too high (not that they could be adjusted on that pos recording app), as the file does not show clipping.
