Reducing or removing background sound from an audio file

Hi, I’m using Audacity version 2.0.2. on Windows 7. I’m a first time user of Audacity.

I have an audio file which I downloaded from a website. It’s a dialog file from a movie - I’m trying to either reduce the volume of the background sound/music so that the dialog remains more prominent or even to remove the background sound/music completely if unable to reduce the volume of it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards.

It probably can’t be done :frowning:
You may be able to make some marginal improvement using methods described here: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Vocal_Removal

oh okay, thanks.

Once it’s mixed, you can’t split up a show into performers like speakers, singers, instruments or background sounds. They may be obvious to you, but simple software like Audacity doesn’t “know” what words are.

thanks again
