Recovering a project after Audacity unexpectedly quite

Hi there,

I was trying to upload a pretty large file into Audacity and it unexpectedly quite. Now I cannot open my main file page. It keeps giving me the rainbow thinking swirl but nothing is opening.

Is there anything I can do it get it back?

When you open / upload a file in Audacity, this file is not changed, it is imported. So if Audacity quits unexpectedly, you should be able to re-open that file again. If you just see the beachball, there is a different problem with your computer’s operating system or with Audacity - but not with the file itself. Try to open the file in a different application.

If you already did some work on the file, it can normally be saved (as an .aup3 file). If the application quits without saving, the next time you open it you should see a notice that there is an unsaved work which should be recovered. Audacity has some limited capabilities to re-store your work. And there are some tools (only for Windows, if I am not mistaken) to do some more work.

On macOS (I am using Audacity 3.6.4 on Sonoma 14.8.5 now, and of course earlier versions of macOS and Audaciry) I have so far not experienced an unexpected quit of Audacity. Maybe I was just lucky?

Let’s be clear. You open Audacity (double-click the application icon) and you immediately get the beach ball of death. You do not get a “file recovery dialog”. Right?
