Recording Live DJ sets from Pioneer DJM900NXS Audio Delay

Best Audacity Support, Members and Users,

I am a real DJ, Doing both Vinyl and CDJ DJ set’s.

I was using Audacity to record my dj set’s,
But with the newer version of Audacity i have some issues. (Audacity 2.1.1). [I had 2.0 first].

First i had a problem to connect the mixer as a record from device.
Now that i fixed that sort of issue,

Let’s say when i record i hear the tunes are smooth no delay is mixed in the mix of the Audacity file,

But, When i export the file to MP3 or listen it back the recorded track is shown Delay,

Example:

The tracks slow down or speed up all by themselves without me touching Audacity.

For me, Audacity was the ultimate tool to record my DJ sets and upload the live gigs or the bedroom sessions into Mixcloud.

So, What i would like to know is how can i be ensured that when i record, there is no delay, No more speed or slows in the record and that it comes out exactly the way i am spinning?

I had to dissapoint people to say sorry, Audacity didn’t record it well, the file is FCKD. (Sorry i’m Dutch, don’t know how else i can explain this).

I hope some of you could give a bright view of why it did work with the old version and now it just give so many problems.

I hope at least some one could help me out.

Regards,

Wes.

Do you mean like when a vinyl record plays slowly, or too fast, so the pitch & tempo are affected? That would be VERY strange…

You may have a hardware problem. The clock in your soundcard controls recording & playback speed. There could also be a multitasking issue, but with that you’d get glitches and little bits of audio would be missing during recording which would make playback go faster.

How far off is it? If it’s slightly off and the error is constant (such as constantly playing-back 5% too slow) you might be using a different device for recording & playback. For example, if you are using a USB mixer for recording and your regular soundcard for playback, the clocks may not match (and your regular “cheap” consumer soundcard would be the likely suspect).

A simple “normal” delay (latency) wouldn’t be noticeable, since there might already be a very long delay between the time the show is recorded and whenever it’s played back the next day, or the next week, etc.

I use the usb function on the mixer to record through a midi signal. I tried ASIO4ALL as well but then i can’t get it to work.
I am using the Pioneers Asio driver to record.

The mixer is my soundcard and worked fine before.

The delay is only noticable between the tracks not when i pitch, blend or use effects.

So to me it’s kind of strange.

You have to compile Audacity yourself for ASIO support. If you are using the downloaded release of Audacity it will not work with ASIO devices.

Are you listening to playback on that mixer?

What version of Windows do you have? Have you updated Windows or changed computer?

Do you mean that one song seems at a lower or higher pitch than it should be? If so, were those songs separate Audacity recordings or all made in the same recording step?

Wezzy-K,

Sorry… It’s still not clear what the problem is… Can you upload a short sample that has the problem? How to post a sample.

The delay is only noticable between the tracks not when i pitch, blend or use effects.

What? The silence between tracks is longer??? Or it slows down when you crossfade between tracks???

If possible, make new recording and also post the “original” MP3 so we can compare the good original with the bad recording. (That won’t work with your DJ set because the original only exists “live” and you don’t have a good recording of it.)

I use the usb function on the mixer to record through a midi signal.

No, you’re not recording the MIDI signal… MIDI is NOT audio… I’s not sound… It’s not CDs or MP3s… MIDI is “instructions” for making computer/synthesizer generated music where the MIDI is the “notes and timing” used to generate the audio, or it can be control signals used to control faders on a mixer, or where the hardware can control your computer software.

Eh What?

I use the cue’s to pre listen tracks. I don’t have much understanding of the technical stuff i only know how to use it.

Windows 10. Crashed once, reinstalled it since then i got the problems. All of the newest updates are installed.

No it’s when i don’t use buttons. just in the middle of the tracks i try to blend in like audacity missed parts of the recording and try to fix it by speeding issues.

I can send you the file, but it’s 113mb big. So how do i upload such a big file here to the forums?

Regards, Wes.

We don’t need to listen to the whole show, just a short selection where we can hear the problem. The upload limit is 2MB.

As I said. Audacity as shipped will not record from ASIO devices. If you see a choice between ASIO and some other recording choice in the Pioneer, choose the other choice.

Do you have the latest 1.310 DJM-900NXS firmware for Windows and the latest 1.500 DJM-900NXS driver for Windows? If not, get them from http://www.pioneerdj.com/en/support/software/djm-900nxs/.

I can’t cut it cause i don’t know the exact points.

Yes, And when it’s updated, i get a notification about it to update. So everything is up to date.

How about playing the file, then when you hear a problem area, drag a selection over it and File > Export Selected Audio… ?

If not, then upload the file to one of these:

and give us the web address of the file. Tell us the exact time where the problem occurs.

What notification do you get about updating what? If you install the correct Windows 10 drivers for DJM then some notice tells you the drivers are not up-to-date, something seems wrong. Did you get that notification when you did not have this speed problem?

Gale

Sorry for the long wait, i was a bit busy.

First:

Pioneer send me e-mail notifications with new Updates when ready.
When i installed the new Recordbox it automaticly updated all the drivers for the DJM.
Firmware updates are also e-mailed by Pioneer.

Second,

I Uploaded it:

https://www.sendspace.com/file/5apydj

And right from the start of the sample you hear the problem, but when you listen a bit further in the mix, the same issues occur.
