Are you following all the steps on http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/recording_with_usb_turntables.html ?

If you have a traditional turntable, you need a phono preamp or a special USB interface with the phono preamp built-in.

If you are recording the turntable, but the sound is very-weak with no bass, that’s because you don’t have a preamp. (Or, you might not hear anything without a preamp.)

You can test your USB interface (and software setup) by plugging-in “something else”, such as a CD player, or the audio from a DVD player etc.

If the USB interface has a phono preamp, a regular line-level signal (from a CD player, etc.) will overload and distort it, but you can still record sound if it’s working.

That’s OK. The mic input on a laptop or soundcard isn’t right for a turntable anyway. If you have a phono preamp or a turntable with a built-in preamp, you can use line-in on a regular desktop/tower soundcard.

But FYI - Your laptop probably has a combination headphone/microphone jack. These will accept a regular 3.5mm TRS headphone plug, but in order to use a microphone you need a TRRS plug which is a little longer with the microphone connection at the tip.

How sure are you about that?

All the TRRS plugs I’ve ever seen have the microphone either third (Nokia) or fourth (Apple). Attach. That’s so you can plug generic headphones in and not notice anything wrong. The shafts are both 9mm long. Having one longer would also kill the headset/headphone interchange.

 No, I’m not sure about that!

I see a custom game system that had tip be microphone. I guess that’s so you had to buy their headsets. The game makers are such warm people…
