Recording level difference between Audacity versions

Hello Everyone: I am an occasional Audacity user, and I recently updated from 2.3.3 to 3.7.3. I needed to do a voice recording on a Windows 11 system, using older (6-7 years) Sony, inexpensive, in-ear, jack attached headphones. I could not get Audacity to register any meaningful recording level, and the playback was barely audible. I went through several troubleshooting processes and recommendations, to no avail. I was sure that I had previously used these headphones to record successfully, but that would have been on Windows 10, with Audacity 2.3.3.

So I re-installed Audacity 2.3.3 and the results, while not perfect, were a significant improvement over 3.7.3.

Can anyone suggest what the issue could be?

Cheers. . .

The recording & playback volume sliders are now “hidden” behind the recording & playback meters.

Audacity gets the audio from Windows and the drivers and with Audacity at 100% you will get whatever it’s being fed.

(With some drivers and some settings etc., Audacity’s recording volume control doesn’t do anything.)

between those versions the level sliders were incorporated into the meters.
The disc-shaped-sliders can be difficult to see …

Hello DVDdoug, Trebor: Thank you for your quick responses. When I was testing 3.7.3 previously, most of the troubleshooting guides mentioned the new level sliders, and I am convinced that I had the recording and playback levels at the maximum, but I still wasn’t getting a good result. However, with my latest re-install of 3.7.3 (including resetting the Preferences) those levels are showing as 100%, and while I have to crank up the Windows volume to 100% to hear anything clearly, I suppose it is usable.

Anyway, I appreciate your replies - they are very helpful. I record and edit audio infrequently, so I probably need more practice to get used to the settings and Windows dependencies.

Windows has microphone level & boost sliders …

Got it - thanks. . .
