Recording audio from both mic + direct sound from Mac OS 13.7.5 using Audacity 3.7.3 & BlackHole 2ch, crashing audacity consistently.

Hello Audacity Community,

I’m experiencing a persistent crashing issue with Audacity 3.7.3 on macOS 13.7.6. I’m trying to record audio from my USB microphone (finfine XLR/USB gaming mic) on one track and audio from my computer (specifically via BlackHole 2ch) on a separate track simultaneously.

Here’s my setup:

  • Audacity Version: 3.7.3
  • Operating System: iMac desktop running on macOS 13.7.6
  • Microphone: finfine XLR/USB gaming mic, connected via USB-C. It appears in Audio MIDI Setup as “fifine microphone” and “finfine microphone 2,” each with two channels for input or output respectively.
  • BlackHole: BlackHole 2ch (as of 5/15/25).

Audio MIDI Setup (Aggregate Device):
I have created an Aggregate Device with the following configuration:

  • Included Devices: “fifine microphone” (input only selected) and “BlackHole 2ch”
  • Order of Devices: microphone first, then BlackHole, each with drift correction selected
  • Clock Source: “fifine microphone,” since “Built-in Input” was not an available option
  • Drift Correction: Enabled for both devices.
  • Input Channels (as listed in the Aggregate Device details): microphone shows channels 1 & 2, displayed as Front Left/Right, while BlackHole shows channels 3 & 4, with both slots being empty
  • Output Channels (as listed in the Aggregate Device details): BlackHole shows Channels 1 & 2, but each is an unnamed slot still

What I’m doing in Audacity:

  • Selecting my “Aggregate Device” as the Recording Device in the Device Toolbar.
  • Creating a stereo track (Tracks > Add New > Stereo Track).
  • Attempting to record while speaking into my microphone and playing audio on my computer.

The Problem:
As soon as I click the record button, Audacity crashes immediately and displays an error message: “Exception code 0x0.”
With some fiddling, the best I can do is to record one stereo track or 2 mono track splits of the same audio source - either my OS or my mic - but only one at a time, depending on the finagling.

What I have tried:
I’ve tried creating different Aggregate Device configurations, trying a Multi-Output Device instead (to no avail), and have found that I am unable to select left/right channels on mono tracks in Audacity (the option wasn’t available in any drop-down menus). I even tried resetting Audacity preferences. Nothing has fully worked. The closest I’ve been able to stumble upon has been recording two mono tracks or one stereo track of the same input - either just my mic or just the OS. I’m in over my head here.

I’ve searched the forums for similar issues but haven’t found this exact problem. Any help or suggestions on how to resolve this crashing issue or revise this configuration or setup that could help me record from both my microphone and BlackHole/macOS would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

I am not a Mac person, so this advice may not apply. Perhaps someone can direct you to a software mixer program for the Mac like VoiceMeeter Banana is for Windows.
