Recording a guitar track then recording a vocal track seperate

I would like to be able to record a track for guitar, then record another track, vocals or another instrument, without effecting the guitar track. Perhaps saving a track and then pulling it in as a backing track to play to while recording a new track? Thanks in advance

Of course it is possible. Select the recorded track. Export it (when exporting, set the checkbox against to “Export selected”), and re-import the newly saved track. When importing, Audacity will automatically create a new track on which it will place the imported track. That is, two identical tracks will appear on the timeline. Now delete the recording on the first track (not the track itself, but only the recording), place the cursor at the beginning of the recording (or at the desired location) and start recording a new instrument (it will be recorded on the first track). Repeat the process until you have recorded all the instruments.
Important note: If you record an instrument from a different point in the timeline, after selecting the first track, you will need to expand selecting of the recorded clip (or clips) to the beginning of the timeline. This will keep the recorded tracks in sync.

Thank, I’ll have to play around with that and see if it gets me where I want to be. In the end I’m trying to have a seperate track for each thing. For example I’d still like to have the guitar seperate on one track then a seperate track for the vocal and so on. That way in the end it would allow me to adjust each track sererately to achieve the final mix. I hope this makes sense, Thanks again

I was just reading an article on some recording and they mentioned what I guess was the proper term for what I was asking for . . . multitract recording. Can Audacity be set up to do that?

You do this by consistently saving each track separately.

Only if you have a multi-channel sound card connected. Otherwise, do as I described above.
And in any case, you won’t be able to play all the instruments at the same time. If you’re alone, you’ll have to record only one track at a time and save each track separately.
