Recorder slider does not work

I am running Audacity 3.6.1 (Just updated). Using Windows 10. The recording slider does not work. the slider moves, but does not make any difference in the input. I am recording from a turntable through a preamp. I am getting blasted and have no control. I have recorded many vinyls using the same setup.

How’s the preamp connected to the computer? Into line-in (blue) on a regular soundcard, or through a USB interface? Normally you can’t can’t control the recording level with USB. The analog-to-digital converter is what clips (distorts) so you have to lower the analog level before it’s digitized. Most USB audio interfaces have gain controls.

You can check Windows Microphone Boost for whatever input you are using.

I have the preamp output into the rear mic input. This is the way I have always done it. The slider on the recorder level input does not change the input I see on the waveform. The output slider does not work either.
Is anyone else having this problem?
