What are you trying to record? Where is the performer?

Have you installed Pulse Audio Volume Control (pavucontrol)? If you are recording from a motherboard input it is best to use pavucontrol to choose the correct input.

Also see http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/faq_recording_troubleshooting.html#flatline .

I am recording streaming download audio, from a podcast online. Oh - I just figured it out. I do have pavucontrol installed. I went the Recording tab and changed the setting under ALSA Capture From, to: ‘Monitor of built in audio analog stereo’ As soon as I changed this setting, Audacity immediately started recording the soud.

Thank you so much!

Yes. This is actually documented in the Manual: Recording Computer Playback on Linux .
