Record new track listening to old

I want to record a second (and third and fourth…) track to accompany/play along with the earlier recorded tracks without duplicating the earlier ones in the second. I want to listen to the earlier tracks while recording the new but without re-recording the old.

As I type this I see several old, old posts asking this same question but I don’t see any way to click on them to read them and their responses. How does this work?

I’ve read elsewhere some old instructions from years ago using menu choices that no longer exist. I keep getting the impression that this was a working feature in past builds/versions. Why would a useful, straightforward functionality be removed in subsequent versions? Did I get that wrong?
