Project "not saved correctly" - Can anyone help me out?

Hi everyone,

I pray that anyone has a solution that works for a non-technical expert like me for me issue. For the past few days I have been working on a pretty complex audio documentary, saving repeatedly. Now I tried to open it to continue work, but this error message shows up:

Project restored. This project was not saved correctly during the last session of Audacity. It has been restored to the state it was in at the last snapshot.<<

However, the session that is being opened is from several (full) days of work ago. There are two other files in the same folder:
… .aup3-shm 10.39.12 AM.aup3-shm
…aup3-wal 10.39.12 AM.aup3-wal
The date of these files is from when I actually stopped working on the project, thus I suppose these supporting files have the information about all the updates in them that didn’t make it into the main session?

If this is relevant, I am using Google Drive (Desktop Version) thus I suspect something went wrong with the synchronization.

Does anyone have any advice how I can restore the actual final version of my project with help of those two “supporting files”? I’m keeping all my fingers crossed and would be SO grateful - thank you!
Best wishes,
Erik.

I can’t help you with restoring of your project, but generally it is not recommended to work with Audacity on a “cloud”. You can copy your files there after having closed / saved everything - but please copy it again to a local device if you want to make changes.

But what makes me wonder is your statement that the last available/recoverable version is from several days ago and you say you had worked with it since then. This somehow does not make sense. The error message should have come up just the first time you re-started working with the project…

The .aup3-shm and .aup3-wal files are temporary files which should be deleted automatically after the project is closed/saved.

Did you try to find a newer .aup3 file using a utility like “Find Any File” by Thomas Tempelmann?

Hopefully someone else here has more experience with recovering files, I wish you good luck!

Hi, thanks for you response! Yeah, I worked on it for several days and saved/closed it, but when the file broke and it said it went back to the last snapshot, it for some reason restored the version of the file that was several days old, not the one e.g. from the day prior … :-(. “Find any File” unfortunately didn’t yield any results …
