Problem recording Stereo-Track

Hi folks,

I am running Audacity on Ubuntu-Studio 14.04 ! My Audio-Interface is a Behringer UCA-202 USB. It is connetcted to the TAPE-Outs of our Behringer 2442FX into the UCA202 and via USB into the UBUNTU-Studio-Box. The Configuration through JACK into Audacity is working. JACK is running fine and when recording I can get a recording done.

Here is my Problem:

When selecting a Stereo-Track from the TRACKS-Menue for recording, it shows the Stereo TRACK. So far so good! But how do I start a recording now?
Pressing the recording Button, will open an additional Track with the recording.
Also I am not able to record the left channel (or right) first, then go back and record the right channel of the Stereo Track, because I can not find a recordingbutton
othe than the one that does start a new Track and leaves the old one untouched.

Any hints?

Cheers,

Topic moved to Linux forum (please note that the information in red near the top of the page is there to help you get replies that are relevant).

Press the red record button, or the keyboard shortcut “R”.

Yes, that is normal.

If you want to continue a recording on the same track you need to “Append Record”:
“Transport menu > Append Record”
Keyboard shortcut: Shift + R

This is a little bit tricky because neither Audacity nor the UCA-202, have channel mapping.

When recording a stereo track in Audacity:
Whatever comes out from the left channel of your mixer will record to the left channel in Audacity and whatever comes out of the right channel of your mixer is recorded in the right channel in Audacity.

When recording in mono:
Audacity will record whatever comes into the “first” audio channel.
The “first” audio channel with your set-up is equivalent to the “left” channel.

So, to record only the left channel, there are several ways to do this. Here are two ways:
1)

  • To record only the left channel into a stereo track:
Set your mixer to play only the left channel, and set Audacity to record in mono.
  • To record only the right channel into a stereo track:
Set your mixer to play only the right channel, and set Audacity to record in mono.
  • To record only the left channel into a mono track:
Set Audacity to record 1 channel mono.
Set your mixer to play sound that you want for the left channel out through the left channel (pan each input source that you are using all the way to the left.
  • To record only the right channel into a mono track:
Set Audacity to record 1 channel mono.
Set your mixer to play sound that you want for the right channel out through the left channel (pan each input source that you are using all the way to the left.

To join two mono tracks to make one stereo track, see here: Audacity Manual

Note that for multi-track projects it is normal to work with multiple tracks rather than trying to force everything into a single stereo track.
You can mix down any number of tracks into a single track at any time using “Tracks > Mix and Render”: Audacity Manual

Wow,

thx a bunch! That should really help me further! I will try it out and let you know.
