Hello everyone! How do I prevent Audacity from automatically changing the recording level I set to a much lower level? It seems to me that the program generally resets the recording level completely randomly.
The direct answer: You can’t.
Audacity uses PortAudio to connect to the computer’s sound system. When PortAudio is initialised, PortAudio qeries the sound system to see which devices are available, then initialises connections to your selected input and output devices.
Some sound device drivers perform a reset when a connection to PortAudio is initialised. This is not something that can be configured by end users, it is the behaviour that has been programmed into the device driver.
In most cases, the computer’s recording level should be set at, or near 100% (unity gain), so that the recording utilises the full 16-bit (or 24-bit) range of the A/D converter (Analug to Digital converter). In most cases when using an external audio device, the recording level should be set on the device rather than in the computer’s sound settings, though this is not possible on all devices as some devices do not have a recording level control.
This is some nonsense. All of our computers have an RME HDSP 9632 sound card installed. The driver for this card is not programmed to reset settings. If I use another program to record sound, its recording level settings are not reset!!!
Does the “other program” use PortAudio?
Does the “other program” use the Windows sound system or ASIO?
It is possible to build Audacity from the source code with ASIO support, but due to license restrictions it is not legally possible to distribute Audacity with ASIO support enabled.
No ASIO is used. Audacity is not ASIO friendly. Anyway, I failed.
What are you actually recording from? Something connected via ADAT or S/PDIF?
I’m wondering why you need to set the recording volume low.
It seems that you do not understand what I wrote. I repeat: the program randomly DECREASES the recording level on its own.
None ADAT or S/PDIF. Only analog inputs
Got it. I misread your initial post as “the recording level I set to a much lower level”.
Audacity cannot change the recording level on its own, but Windows Sound can.
Check the Windows Sound Control settings and ensure that all “Enhancements” are disabled: Disable Audio Enhancements - Microsoft Support
Thanks, but this is advice is good for newbies. Of course I checked everything and there is no “Enhancements” of sound
There can be other layers of audio enhancement, e.g. MaxxAudio (on Dells), DTS (on HP).
No Dells, HP etc. These are computers (Windows 10) with inserted RME cards
Not this RME HDSP 9632 sound card?
