Hi there,
I have recently downloaded Audacity 2.1.2 on WIndows 10 Home, x64 and a 2GHz processor. It actually works fine, but when I open it with my Presonus USB Audiobox already connected, I get the message :
Error initializing audio
Could not find any audio devices
You will not be able to record or play audio
Error : Internal PortAudio Error
The Audio Device Info outuputs :
Default recording device number: -1
Default playback device number: -1
No devices found
If I open Audacity without having connected my Presonus USB Audiobox, it works fine, and when I try to scan for audio devices, it loses them all, including the built-in ones that it had initially not encountered any problems with.
I used to run Audacity (can’t remember which version unfortunately, all I know is that it was downloaded November 2015) on Windows 7 with the same Presonus device and it worked fine.
Does anyone know what I should do ?
Thanks in advance
Dan
Yes it is a known problem with Audacity 2.1.2. If any audio devices do not have proper Windows 10 drivers (in this case your AudioBox) then Audacity does not see any devices.
This is fixed in 2.1.3-alpha so that all devices except the one with bad drivers will be recognised. So you may want to try that alpha version. See http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Windows_10_OS#internal_error.
After that I suggest you visit http://www.presonus.com/support/downloads to look for Windows 10 drivers/firmware for your particular AudioBox model.

Thank you very much. I will try those options in case, but it actually works when I use a multi-USB socket thingy, so I’m guessing it was a USB 3.0 issue. But now I know there may be more appropriate drivers etc, I’ll check it out. Thanks very much

Do you mean a USB computer hub, that attaches to a USB port to provide more USB ports? If so, a computer hub isn’t desirable for audio devices - it can lead to dropouts or “error opening sound device”. That error, and only on that device, is what I would have expected if it was merely a problem with the USB connection.
But if this is Windows 10 being more keen to fail devices, Audacity 2.1.3-alpha might help.
