Pre-recording. Can I monitor without hitting Record?

It’s my first post and my question is rather basic: Why is my audio source not playing through the computer speakers unless and until I hit the Record button? I’ve got a turntable plugged in, and I can record OK, but I’d like to use Audacity to hear vinyl tracks ahead of time so I can decide what’s worth recording. Can’t I just set up Audacity as a player for now? Thanks in advance.

So, that’s Windows 10 Pro, running Audacity 2.3.0

The easiest way to “start monitoring” the sound without starting the recording, is to click on the recording meter (it says “Click to start monitoring”)https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/meter_toolbar.html#recording

OK, found it. “Left-click on the recording meter to turn monitoring on. Click again to turn it off.”
