Plug-in to Replicate SCP MTF Announcements

Hi everyone, so I couldn’t find a plug-in that works for Audacity that similarly distorts and amplifies audio as FL studio’s “Hardcore” plugin.

(Demonstrated in this video as an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zn8T1jf8xaY&t=100s&ab_channel=ButedMesa)

I do believe it’s similar to Guitar distortion/amplification but I have no idea and I’m only doing this for a short test. If anyone out there has enough experience or knowledge in this area any help would be greatly appreciated

So… I tried using the a Tannoy effect, for referance here’s my audio now…

let me know if you’ve any tips or if you need the referance audio for direct comparison, but I’d rather not reply spam

The esses are painfully loud. De-ess (3.5kHz to 4.5kHz) before reverb effects like tannoy,
(as it’s not possible to de-ess properly afterwards).

I’ve reworked the Esses (HF PR to 4)
Also Tannoy dosen’t particularly fit the type of reverb I’m looking for unfortunatly … soo I’ll stick with staff pad or some real-time effect

Here’s the correct yt link…

Walkie-talkie/intercom effects can be had with “Helmet Radio 1.5” plugin …

before-after
settings-used

[ There are realtime megaphone emulation plugins ].

Compared to the “MTF Epslion-11 nine tailed fox announcment”-
[unfortunatly I can’t link more than 1 embed so I ask you please search the previous statment in YouTube]
I still think the distortion use is more bass focused distortion because “hardcore” (the plugin used in FL Studio to make the effect) was intended for gituars, but I can’t seem to make it work… here’s an example of me testing them all with comparible audio
I did not use any reverb effect so I could add them in Real-time effects

Public Announcment Settings:

High Frequency roll-off: 3.5 kHz
Low Frequency roll-off: 400 Hz
Distortion: 80%
Echo length: 0 s
Echo amount: 0 %
Reverb length: 0s
Reverb amount: 0%
Output level: 0

The [Helmet 1.5 ]
Settings are an exact copy of perscribed amounts as seen in your previous reply.

If you need more bass, change the high-pass on HelmetRadio from 400Hz to, say, 200Hz,
(I don’t think that will help intelligibility).

I’ll respond with all the appropriate embeds required (as I am unable to put more than one per response)… so sorry if you get multiple replies but I feel it’s appropriate in this context.

The purpose of this is to emulate a specific announcer from SCP:Containment Breach, provided is both the audio and transcript of an announcment by said announcer…

MTF Announcment Audio:

Transcript:

Mobile Task Force Unit Epsilon-11, designated Nine-Tailed Fox, has entered the facility. All remaining survivors are advised to stay in the evacuation shelter, or any other safe area, until the unit has secured the facility. We’ll start escorting personnel out when the escaped SCPs have been re-contained.

To assist the audible part of the re-creation process I’ve had AI re-create the Transcript with adjustments where necessary, apologies if it’s not a 1:1 expressive recreation

This will be important to note as I’m attempting a general-all voice to ensure that my voice isn’t the issue, what with expression, tempo, and general voice-dynamics.

I’ve used the effect [Helmet 1.5] as advised and still only got this result?

The effect [Helmet 1.5] seems to function more as an EQ with static… and personally I think the audio from the original announcer sounds crisper in the middle to high range. If you know a more appropriate effect that’s free and accessible, please reply, but I understand if this is an esoteric problem for a FL-Studio effect’s recreation. Especially that on a non-existent budget…

They are mixing-in some of the undistorted* speech, which is easier to understand.
The guitar plugins have a wet/dry mix knob which make that simple to do.
To do that with Plugins without a wet/dry mix, you need to created an in-sync duplicate track which is undistorted, and mix some of that with the distorted version.

[* This is not how actual Tannoy announcements would sound: it’s a Hollywood theatrical version which is easier for audiences to understand than the real McCoy].

BTW a good free guitar distortion effect that works in audacity is Chow Centaur

two passes - neural then traditional
Two passes at these settings, neural then traditional, gives a realistic strong analog distortion.

Thanks for taking the time to respond… while I do think it’s good to consider realism… I also would like to replicate the effect for a side-by-side… then make a descision. Fortunatly I’m now able to upload multipul embeds so I’ll be using that from now on.

I’m going to attempt to re-create this distortion while keeping a realistic copy on-hand so I can compare the two later.

In regards to recreation of the original audio… I think a more suitable plugin would be BYOD (Bring Your Own Distortion), I’m unable to make a comparable set of “Processors” that seem to mimic how the announcer speaks… but the plugin used in FL Studio uses this interface if someone (such as you who may have more experience with software of this variety) could decipher and possibly tell me the translated distortion processes applied…?

For reference, I’ll add reverb and delay later with better VST3 plug-ins, however, I’d much appreciate it if you’ve any advice as to how to re-create the distortion plugin seen here.

In the end I’ll try to find the sweet spot between being true to life and staying true to the original creator’s vision. This is a recreation after all… even if not realistic.
