Plays On Only the Internal Speaker

Desktop, Dell Optiplex Small Form Factor
Audacity 3.7.5
Windows 7 Pro
External speaker is powered by USB. Speaker’s audio connection is the standard analog output, plugged in to either the front panel or rear jack.
Windows Media Player and YouTube play on the external speaker.
In Control Panel/Sound, the external speaker is the Default Device.

I’ve tried selecting either speaker in the Audacity Edit/Preferences/Audio Settings/Playback pull-down, and in the tool bar Audio Setup/Playback Device list. I’ve Rescanned. I’ve Restarted Windows.

What else can I investigate?

Do you have selected the USB speakers in Audacity’s sound settings?
I have read elsewhere that Audacity does not work well with USB sound output, but I may be mistaken.

I think he is saying that it is an analog speaker, just powered from a USB port.

BobD:

Every program can have a different volume level in the Volume Mixer program. Audacity may be set to a very low level.

Thanks hugely for responses!

On one computer (Windows 7 Pro), I found that choosing “Audio Setup/Host/MME” or “Audio Setup/Host/Windows Direct Sound”, in the “Audio Setup” button, sends audio to the external speakers. Choosing “Windows WASAPI” sends audio to the internal speaker.
On another computer, choosing WASAPI sends audio to the external speakers.

(Aside: my apologies for being slow to respond here. This forum doesn’t work on Windows 7. I use Windows 10 (dual boot with 7) only when I have to.)

Yep. Powered from USB, signaled from the analog jack.
