Playback volume is extremely low, even if the output volume is at 100%

Hello,

In the past 2 weeks I’ve noticed that the playback volume of whatever I record in Audacity (version 3.7.8) is extremely low, barely even audible. That’s the same whether I use my external microphone and interface, or the built-in microphone of my Mac laptop. you can barely hear the volume of the recorded track when playing it back in Audacity (even when the output volume is on max). When I export the track and play the file on my desktop, the volume is fine. But not when playing it in Audacity itself, which is a problem as I cannot hear my recordings in real time, only after export. I checked and all the settings seem to OK. Any ideas?

Thanks a lot.

Which output volume are you talking about? Your computer’s in the system settings or Audacity’s? The controls for recording and playback are “hidden” below the meters.

Thanks! I was referring to both the volume on my computer, in system settings, and the volume on my SSL2 interface, that connects my microphone to my computer and controls the recording and playback levels. But yes, I played around with those hidden controls (which I’ve never touched in all my years of using Audacity, so that’s weird that anything would change there now), and will see how that affects the volume, and if that solves the issue.
