Playback in Preview Noticably Bass Boosted

I’ve noticed an issue recently where the exported version of the file usually turns out less bass-y then it sounds in when playing it back in-program. This has me frustrated as I use the program for most of my mixing. Any possible explanations?

I keep the output settings the same as the project file and source files, and can hear the difference on uncompressed WAV files, just as an FYI.

Some VST3 plugins in Audacity apply the default setting when mixed-down/exported, rather than the settings you crafted. Saving your settings as a preset can sometimes be a workaround.

I assume you are playing-back on the same computer/speakers/headphones?

Are you playing back in a different application? How about when you re-open the file in Audacity?

I play the file back in multiple programs and it’s noticeable in all of them. I have VST plugins installed, but the effect shows up in exported files from projects that don’t use them.

It also plays back way louder in general. I confirmed that this is just a preview issue.

Sorry if this is frowned upon, but I’m bumping the thread as I’m still actively seeking an answer here.

Other possible explanations include …

other playback is on different device with “loudness equalization” enabled.

bass phase cancelling when playing back on mono devices, (or accidentally mixing down to mono).
