Playback doesn’t begin at all, no matter what I do. I have tried the play button, pressing space, and pressing “P” to no avail. Preferences have all been reset, and it functions fine on older Audacity versions.

I’m experiencing the exact same issue. It’s not that I’m not getting playback, the playback literally won’t start at all. I actually managed to find a fix, although I’m unsure why exactly it worked. I’m pretty sure it has to do with how audacity is binding itself to audio output devices. If I had to hazard a guess, the audio engine just isn’t initializing if WASAPI doesn’t like your output device?
I resolved it just now by changing my audio output from my virtual audio device (which has all my EQ and balancing, kind of annoying) to my headset directly, and suddenly, it’s working. I have absolutely no idea why.
ok, having run a few more tests, I’m pretty sure my theory was correct. MME and Windows DirectSound can both bind to my virtual audio output just fine, it seems to be isolated to WASAPI

I just downloaded the new version and have the same problem. This is the only thread I could find about it, so thank you!! I also had to switch to MME to get my headphones to work.
