I made the mistake of upgrading Audacity, and I haven’t in a long time. My former version was 1.2.6. Now it is 2.3.2. I have a Surface Pro 4 and use Windows 10.
I tried to play some of my music that I had worked with several years ago, and none of it will play.
Is there any way to convert the music? It tells me I am missing “alias files” and I have no idea what they are talking about. I didn’t delete anything. But the new version won’t play them.
I am not very adept at this program; I seldom use it and I find it way more complicated than I need.
That problem is not due to the Audacity version, it’s because your projects are missing some of their data.
Modern versions of Audacity make it a bit harder to fall into this hole, because Audacity defaults to copying all of the data into the project.
“Alias files” are also referred to as “dependencies”. They are audio files (usually WAV or AIFF) that are external to the project, but are required by the project (the project depends on those files being available in their original location).
