OpenVino on M4 Mac

Hi,

I’ve been using OpenVino Music Seperation plugins and Windows and Linux since release - without any issues. However, I recently bought an Mac Mini M4 to use as my music editing desktop machine.

Unfortunately, Music Seperation on MacOS is VERY slow. To run the Music Seperation plugin on Windows for about 32 bars of music takes about 10 seconds. It takes almost 1 minute on the Mac M4.

Specs are
Windows/Linux - Thinkpad X13 Gen3 (16GB, 12th Gen i7)
Mac Mini M4 - 16GB , 256GB

For all intents and purposes, the Mac should be significantly faster than an 12th Gen Intel i7.

Any advice from anybody here?

You don’t mention the GPU of either computer, or I didn’t understand the terminology. OpenVINO will run much faster on a GPU than it will on a CPU, and only on certain GPUs.

Apologies. My windows laptop has the regular “Intel Iris” graphics. Not good at all, but I use CPU to the processing, not GPU. The Intel laptop does the Music Seperation pretty quickly (by my standards)

I’m using CPU on both the Mac and the Intel machine. On the MacoS version of Audacity, only CPU encoding is available (no option to select GPU)

Right, for OpenVINO on Mac, only CPU is supported.

Thanks for the response, Ryguy.

But do you have any idea why its so slow on Mac OS? I just run Music Seperation on my old Intel laptop and it took 55 seconds. The same track took 9 minutes on the Mac Mini M4.

Is this expected behaviour?

Sorry, I meant to say I ran Music Seperation on a track that was 4m15s long and it took 55 seconds on my old Intel laptop yet it took 9s mins on the M4 Mac Mini.

hmm, I’m not too sure what to expect to be honest. I don’t actually have a Mac to test on. It could simply be that OpenVINO x86 CPU plugin has kernel implementations that are much better optimized than the ARM CPU plugin (which is used on Mac).

At the very least, the x86-based plugin has been around much longer, and so it might take much better advantage of x86-specific optimizations (like SSE, AVX, AVX2 extensions, etc.).

You could always file an issue and ask the question directly to OpenVINO, here: GitHub · Where software is built

Ok great - thanks for your help. I will give that a shot.
