not picking up audio from computer

hi can u please help , pls be patient as i am computer illiterate, i have downloaded the latest version of audacity, using a creative sb x - fi sound card on a windows 7 pro os. i cannot get the program to pick up any sound even though i am getting sound through my speakers (logitech 5.1). i have been trying for a few hours now downloaded codecs from audacity as well as realtek

What are you recording? YouTube sound or your live voice? Something else?

Koz

thanks for replying so soon,i am from sa so i dont know the time diff between u n me. i am trying to record music off the net. i am currently using ummy video downloader for you tube converting from video to mp3 with no problems as that is a straight forward 1 click but i need audacity to download mp3

i am trying to record mp3 of the net ,i am currently using ummy video downloader for you tube converting video to audio. no problem with this as it is a single click but i need audacity to download mp3

Audacity does not download anything from the internet.

I would install FFmpeg ( Audacity Manual ) and LAME ( Audacity Manual ) .

Then use your video downloader to download the video.

Drag the video into Audacity and it will extract the audio without quality loss.

File > Export from Audacity as MP3. This will lose a little quality - it cannot be avoided if you want MP3.

Gale

thanks for your input GALE but i can convert you tube videos to audio mp3 with my downloader i need audacity to actually pick up sound tracks from sites that only stream, nothing is appearing on my recording level maybe something wrong with the settings of my recording device on my computer . pls help

Try the “WASAPI loopback” method described here: http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/tutorial_recording_computer_playback_on_windows.html

thanks steve i have tried all possible variations under recording input mme wasapi windows sound etc no difference

Instead of trying random variations, try doing this in Audacity 2.1.0 from Audacity ® | Download for Windows.

  1. Open Device Toolbar .
  2. In the first (Host) box of Device Toolbar, choose “Windows WASAPI”.
  3. In the second (Recording Device) box in Device Toolbar, choose the (loopback) input for the device that is playing back the audio - so presumably SoundBlaster.
  4. In the third (Recording Channels) box in Device Toolbar, choose mono or stereo.
  5. In the fourth (Playback Device) box in Device Toolbar, choose the Speakers or Headphones that you are using for listening. It will be easiest to choose SoundBlaster, assuming your Logitech speakers can plug into SoundBlaster.
  6. Start playing the audio you want to record.
  7. Press the big red Record button in Audacity.

We cannot see your computer, so if you need more help, AND if you have permission from the copyright holders to record the stream, I suggest you show us the information from Help > Audio Device Info… .

To do that, right-click inside Audio Device Info and choose “Select All”, right-click again and “Copy”, then paste the information here.

Playback volume is native

You have Windows default playback device set to Speakers (Creative SB X-Fi) so your song on the internet will play to that device.

But you have Audacity’s recording device set to Realtek Stereo Mix. Realtek cannot capture the song playing on X-Fi - it can only capture the song if it was playing to Realtek speakers, but you do not have the Realtek speakers enabled in Windows.

So change the Audacity recording device in Device Toolbar to “What U Hear” (Creative SB X-Fi)" and turn up the volume of the song in the web player.

If that does not work, also change the host in Device Toolbar to MME.

hi guys im still waiting for some help

No you’re not. Please read the previous post - you have been helped but for whatever reason have chosen to ignore it.

still waiting for help regarding my problem

As Steve pointed out

Gale

At the top, the final tool bar has four windows. Make sure you set all four of them properly for your computer.

Yes, that’s the Device Toolbar as described in previous posts.

thanks guys but i have used every possible combination in the device toolbar including those suggested by the forum and nothing is being picked up by the recording level but at the 0.0 the line does shudder every couple of seconds

What program are you using to play the streaming audio?
Which sound card is it playing through?

Play your song on the web so that you can hear it in SB X-Fi. Then set it up like this in Device Toolbar:

Host: MME
Recording Device: “What U Hear” (Creative SB X-Fi)
Recording Channels: 2 (stereo)
Playback Device: Speakers (Creative SB X-Fi)

In the Audacity Menu bar, click Transport and make sure there is no tickmark by “Sound Activated Recording”. If you see a tickmark, click “Sound Activated Recording” to remove the tickmark.

Report back on exactly what happens when you choose those settings above. We do not want to hear that you have tried all random settings. Try exactly the settings above.
