Hi, I’m on a Mac using OS X yosemite 10.10.5. I have used audacity for years, but today i went to change tempo on a song and Audacity wouldn’t pull up the wav file. It opened in my tool bar like normal, I went to file>open, picked my song, and it showed that it was uploading it, and then nothing. So i went and downloaded the new Audacity 2.1.0, but the same thing is happening. I’m assuming it’s something with my mac since it did it with both the old audacity and the new, but I have no idea what the problem is… please help!

Audacity 2.1.0 is not the current version. There was a bug in 2.1.0 where files that the Audacity QuickTime importer would usually take (like M4A) would not appear after import.
That problem should not happen for a standard WAV file containing lossless PCM audio because Audacity’s PCM importer should take the file, but perhaps your WAV file contains some other type of audio. A WAV file is a container format so it could contain any legitimate audio codec for the operating system.
I would try 2.1.1 from http://audacityteam.org/download/mac where the QuickTime importer problem is fixed.
If 2.1.1 still cannot import the file for whatever reason, you could try installing FFmpeg from http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/faq_installation_and_plug_ins.html#macff.
MediaInfo will show you technical details of what the audio file really is.

Hi Gale,
thanks for getting back to me. I uploaded the 2.1.1 but now it won’t launch at all. When I click the icon from my Applications folder it tries to pop up on my tool bar but gets booted out. I tried opening it from finder as well by right clicking on it and hitting open, but the same thing happens. Any ideas?? Is there some button in my firewall i need to push to allow it to open??

Because you have been using Audacity for a long time, there may be reference to older Audacity in the audacity.cfg settings file that is confusing Audacity 2.1.1. You may have to edit (or easier, just delete) that audacity.cfg file.

Hot Digity, it worked! now the only problem is that when I click on File > Open> itunes, it says Open Itunes to populate this list. It doesn’t pull up my list of music in itunes. I can go around it by dropping songs onto my desk top and importing that way, but if you know how to ‘Populate’ my itunes list let me know.

Sorry that’s a bug that affects Audacity 2.1.1 and later on Yosemite and later (probably caused by some post-Mavericks change that Apple made): http://bugzilla.audacityteam.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1167.
How about dragging your iTunes “Music” folder to the Finder sidebar as a quicker workaround? Then you will see that folder in the Audacity import dialogue.
