The other day, after I updated Audacity my sound stopped working. I have tried restarting my computer, uninstalling and reinstalling Audacity, changing the host and output, even tried using a speaker and headphones but there’s no sound from any of them.
How can I fix this?
“I can’t start my car. What is wrong?”
A bit a description of what you were doing and what is happening, etc. would be quite helpful.
Audacity has a web page with information on fixing stuff like that on Windows computers..
I know that. I already tried the steps on there
I said I updated it and then the sound stopped working. What else am I supposed to tell you?
Well, the story continues. “I just tanked my car, and now it does no longer work…”
Why don’t you tell us a bit about your Windows version, about security settings, about the old and the new Audacity version, about Audacity’s settings, about any device used, about how they are connected, etc…
You did not say that. How am I supposed to know you already tried that if you don’t tell us?
Do you still have the installer for the Audacity before this one? If you don’t, you can get it from the fosshub archive.
Once you get the installer, clear the Windows Preferences file(s) and install the older Audacity. Check it.
I have the Windows Preference Clear instructions … here somewhere. I’m on a mac.
As we go.

There it is.
Look down that link. The preference files will really mess things up if you try to install Audacity “backwards.” Best to start over.
Koz
because the steps I followed came directly from the link you gave me
It’s almost like I stated what version of windows I have in the title of this post
We need details to help. “I Did All That And It Didn’t Work.” doesn’t tell us anything. We have to build your system in our imaginations to generate good help.
Did you back up to the Audacity version before this one? Did you remove the existing preference files?
I can think of one way to really mess things up. Do you have your Windows set to Auto Update? You could have experienced an Audacity and a Windows update which could be why none of this is working.
It is not written anywhere that you have to have only one problem.
Koz
I do have my computer on auto update. I think you may have figured out the issue
I didn’t try backing up yet but before I reinstalled I did make sure that folder was cleared out
