I hit record, play the tape, and there’s no volume on the recording. The volume on the unit is turned up, and on the iMac. So it won’t pick up the recording. What can I do to fix this to get it to record as it used to do?
Is the recording volume in Audacity turned-up? The recording volume slider is “hidden” under the recording meters (and the playback volume behind the playback meters).
A lot of people have trouble with these little USB tape players, and strangely it seems to be more common with Macs.
Are you getting sound out of the cassette player’s headphone jack? Is it working at all?
You actually got Audacity to record from that device in the past?
Check that Audacity has permission to use the “Microphone” (which to Apple, means any audio input device). System Settings > Privacy and Security > Microphone.
Check that it is set as Audacity’s recording device. Audio Setup > Recording Device.
Interesting to know would also be:
- how is the cassette player connected to the Mac?
- any other devices involved?
- does the Mac get a signal at all? What are the settings for sound input?
