No recording after upgrading

Hello, I have a 2016 Macbook Air and just upgraded my browser to Mac OS 10.15.7, so I had to upgrade my Audacity (which was working fine before the upgrade) to version 3.7.6. I’m recording vinyl LP’s using my iMic. It works fine, because I can record the music using Garageband and upload the wav file to Audacity and make edits. But if I try to record using Audacity, there’s just a flat line. No recording. This happens when I choose either the iMic or the internal microphone as recording device. I make sure the System Preferences are set to the input.

Why did you need to upgrade Audacity to 3.7.6? I think any version of 3.x (and probably also 2.x) should work with macOS X 10.15 “Catalina”. What version of Audacity did you use before?

I never succeeded using Garageband for this.

Go to System settings / Privacy and Security and allow access to “Microphone” for Audacity. This is a macOS “feature” which is probably new in Catalina, not a problem of Audacity.

Yes! That was the trick that solved it. Apple showed that the Audacity app was 32-bit, and I needed a newer 64-bit version of Audacity to use it with Catalina. All of this happened because I upgraded my iPhone software and iTunes would no longer work for exporting songs to my phone, requiring the Catalina software and the Music app. Garageband does record the music. I use the version 10.2. Go to Empty Project > Record Using a Microphone. Thanks for the help.
