I can’t figure out how to record analog music on to Audacity with my laptop. The mic dropdown only gives me three choices. mic array, Microsoft sound mapper, and stereo mix. I’ve watched videos that say to choose the Analog connector in the dropdown. It does record using the laptop onboard mic, but I can’t plug into the USB port and have it register in the Audacity screen.
You may not see that exact name. I believe the device name comes from the driver or it might be a default name assigned by Windows.
What’s the source of the music?
If you are trying to record from vinyl or tape you may need an audio interface with line inputs. Most laptops only have mic-in and headphone-out and the mic input is “wrong” for most audio equipment.

I wondered if I needed an interface. My old laptop must have had a mic input because I have recorded into Audacity quite a few years ago. Thanks
