Newbie working with 3.3.3

I am new at recording and have just installed Audacity 3.3.3. Although this seems to be a new, better version of Audacity it seems to have quite a few bugs, or else I am doing something wrong! I use Windows 11. I am a singer, so I have a backing tracks and then tracks with my singing.

  • I have noticed that when I mute the tracks I am not working on and even collapse them, after the recording, whether I want to listen to the playback or want to record again those tracks start playing?
  • I downloaded a backtrack and it had a slight glitch in the middle but I convinced myself that it was in the original. I then listened to the original and discovered that it was only on Audacity, downloaded it again and it is OK now, very strange and can create problems, because once I downloaded the track again the vocals didn’t fit in anymore
  • Why does Audacity say that Reverb is Real Time Available. The option to test is there and it seems to download something but I only heard it play the first time I used it? And it is a pity that functions like Compress and Amplify don’t work real time, as one has to apply them “blind”, then try them, maybe undo and start again?
  • The first time I recorded this track I used Preset Reverb and had to go from Big Room to Vocal I, as Big Room gave it too much reverb. Did a new recording of the same song yesterday, now Vocal I seems to give it no reverb at all and I had to go to Big Room? Exact same track
  • A friend told me that once you have applied effects on Audacity you can’t later go back and tone them down or add a bit more, or even exchange them for another one, is that correct? That would be quite detrimental. My husband works with Sonar and many times we do change effects or get rid of them.

Sorry of this is too many questions, this is my first time here! Thanks…

Thanks for the report! Going through them in reverse:

This is true for the effects you apply directly to the waveform. Audacity 3.2 onwards has the realtime effects panel you already found which lets you tweak effects later on, but we haven’t converted most effects to it yet. Until we get around to converting them, you can download plugins (like VST3 effects) from the internet to use them inside Audacity instead, some of them I have listed on plugins.audacityteam.org.

Did you perhaps apply 2 reverb effects to your track the first time around?

…download something? Can you show me a screenshot or a screen recording?

If this happens again, please provide the Audacity project together with the original file. Data corruption like this is something which never should happen.

A screen recording of this would be helpful. I’ve been unable to reproduce this problem from just your description.

Hi, many thanks for your reply to my many questions. As you can see I am completely talentless in technical issues but… I will learn!!!

A friend told me that once you have applied effects on Audacity you can’t later go back and tone them down or add a bit more, or even exchange them for another one, is that correct? That would be quite detrimental. My husband works with Sonar and many times we do change effects or get rid of them.

I will be very happy when you change the Effects to ones one can tweak!!! Do you have any idea when that will be? I will have a look at how to download the filters in the link you sent me.

Did you perhaps apply 2 reverb effects to your track the first time around? I don’t think so……… I am pretty sure that I removed the previous one but, could it be, because I added it the next day that the Big Room Reverb couldn’t be removed anymore and therefore I would have added Vocal I on the top? I wouldn’t think so, because it was surely less than Big Room and if this was the case it would have been even more. Will keep an eye on that.

…download something? Can you show me a screenshot or a screen recording? Sorry for my use of technical English language…… English is my third language and my technical knowledge is non-existent! I meant that little download bar, it was moving but then when I clicked on preview nothing happened. I have now found out that the Preview only seems to work on stereo tracks, like backing tracks but, if I am not wrong, voice needs to be on a mono track and then the Preview does not work? Or am I doing something wrong?

If this happens again, please provide the Audacity project together with the original file. Data corruption like this is something which never should happen. You are right……… I will try to remember to make a screen shot showing both, if this happens again. And actually I had a look and I still have the file that has the problem. I don’t see how to send here the screen shots but I will have a look. Because I hadn’t seen that I should answer through the site I had answered each of your remarks in green, which was more clear but then I saw that it was a no-reply e-mail address, sorry.

I have noticed that when I mute the tracks I am not working on and even collapse them, after the recording, whether I want to listen to the playback or want to record again those tracks start playing?
A screen recording of this would be helpful. I’ve been unable to reproduce this problem from just your description. In this case it will be difficult to send you a screen shot, because if they turn on by themselves you won’t be able to see whether I did it myself or not? They were all muted and collapsed though. But of course, I can send you a screen shot.

This has become a bit of a mess, sorry… but thanks for all your help and when i send this message I will have a look how to upload the screenshots. Regards, Francisca

PS - Here comes the truncated track then, as I couldn’t add it to the other one. The cursor is more or less in the bit that is missing:

Here are the screenshots then, first the original track:

Oh, it seems that I can only send one of the backing tracks…
