I am not an Audacity pro by any means. I record audiobooks for Audible. I am in the middle of a project and the new compressor and limiter has totally screwed up the sound.
I need someone to help me figure out how my old settings fit into the “new and improved” version.
I agree. Maybe it is great for some but I would prefer to roll back and I think I am going to install an older version. I have a workflow to my music and the limiter and compressor do not work in the same ways at all and for the new features, it seems other behaviors I found useful cannot be replicated here
I found a work-around at
Download Limiter (Audacity <3.6)
Then open Audacity >Effect>Manage Plugins
Enable limiter.ny and disable the built-in limiter.
This lets me use the newer Audacity version with the old Limiter.
Hope this helps!
My “Barn door” advice is to not change anything during a project.
Don’t upgrade software, change microphones or positions, fiddle with interface settings, nothing; leave it alone until you’re done.

There are two.
Select > All
Effect > Steve Daulton > Limiter > Presets & settings > Factory Presets > Defaults.
Change Limit to -3.50dB > Apply for audiobook peak limiting.
