Need to know how to download into a new track...

HELP Anybody…Need to know how to download into a new track…the recordings that I have just made in track #1 & #2 used to START RECORDING INTO THE 3RD TRACK AS SOON AS I CLICK THE RECORD BUTTON?? Now nothing is feeding into the 3rd track when I just push the ‘record button’…it used to work before I upgraded the Audacity…and now it doesn’t …I am wanting to blend my voice track and the music into another track as a final product isn’t that possible? …it WORKED before …the over dub box is checked under ‘transport’…I ‘think’ I’ve tried everything and THIS IS NOT WORKING??? So that in the process of recording my voice on one track and the music on the other…as soon as I get done talking I simple want to pot down on the music and fade the whole thing down…it’s actually just a 1 min deal and the program is not cooperating…HELP…CONFUSED. :astonished:

Is recording the first track and playing it back working correctly?

YES STEVE: THE SYSTEM IS RECORDING AND PLAYING BACK FINE…BUT WHEN I JUST SIMPLY PUSH OR CLICK THE RED RECORD BUTTON IT USED TO AUTOMATICALLY RECORD TRACKS 1 AND 2 AS INTO A 3RD AND 4TH AS SO FORTH AS LONG AS THEY WERE NOT MUTED…NOW …NO MATTER WHAT I’VE LOOKED AT ALL THE PULL DOWNS AND THERE DOESN’T SEEM TO BE AN ANSWER UNDER PREFERENCES…ALSO THE OVERDUB IS ‘CHECKED’ ???

Please try to avoid writing all in upper case - it’s hard on the eyes and it is often considered as “SHOUTING”.

I’ve read your posts 3 times now, and I still don’t have a clear picture of what is happening. When you have recorded one track, (and iy plays back OK), you press the record button to record a second track, and …? What happens then? Does the cursor move along the track? Does it record a flat line? Is there an error message? Does Audacity freeze?

To Steve: Senior Adviser…

Well thanks for reading my post for 3 times Steve at least you tried …ha …OK I will try one more time to explain …the description:

I open Audacity…I have a recorded audio on track #1… it’s usually my voice…track #2 I put my a music bed…NOW…I want to be able to push the ‘RECORD BUTTON’ and have the Audacity System start to record a into track #3 ‘automatically’ like it did BEFORE I JUST UPGRADED INTO YOUR SUPER ADVANCED VERY LATEST AUDACITY EDITION ha ha …when I did that it hasn’t worked??? …I can still record directly from my USB MIC in my Scarlet box 2 port and out and it records no problem …then I can also Import music from my i Tunes library into track #2…no problem…

HERE AGAIN is what is NOT WORKING…track #3 I want to down load the music and my voice into track #3 but track #3 is flat line all the way and I CANNOT get audio to receive the audio from track #1 and track #2 …there is no recording happening after I hit the record button, and track #3 appears, BUT DOES NOT RECEIVE AUDIO and RECORD IT… for me to make my final download into a MP3 mode to send to my desktop to send to somebody.,…does this make sense? I hope so…

I think you may be trying to do this wrong. It may be convenient to do that the way it used to work, but that’s not natural. If you play your entire timeline – all the tracks – and it sounds OK, you should export it just like that and Audacity will automatically mix it down to a single stereo track.

If it doesn’t sound OK as it is, put the fades at the end and any other effects needed right on the track that needs them rather than trying to do them in real time with fader controls.

I would totally Save the show as a Project as well in case you decide to change pieces of it later. Once you smash all your tracks to together into one stereo show, you can’t take it apart again.

Koz

Good, no problem there.
You can then press play and it sounds OK?
Assuming that it does…

That is not supposed to work, so it is good that it doesn’t. It probably worked before by accident because of one of the settings being wrong.

So you have your voice in track 1, music in track 2, and you want a “mix” of track 1 + track 2 in track 3?
How to do that:
Press Ctrl+A (hold down the Ctrl key and press the “A” key). This will select all the tracks.
Press Ctrl+shift+M. This will mix down the selected tracks into a new track.

Does that work? Is that what you want to do?

You probably don’t need to do that at all. As Koz said, when you have track 1 and track 2, if it sounds as you want it to, just “File menu > Export” and Audacity will automatically combine all of the tracks into a single audio file.

Dear Steve:

Ok one more point and I promise to go away.

What you said regarding the following:
Press Ctrl+A (hold down the Ctrl key and press the “A” key). This will select all the tracks.
Press Ctrl+shift+M. This will mix down the selected tracks into a new track.

Yes this works fine…now last and final question…and thanks for your patience.
How do I get a final mix where I have control of the music bed to pot down on the music so I can hear my voice louder than the music…or is this something I’m just going to have to do on a control board which I have also…I have a Tascam 4 track mixer…but I was hoping that I would have to go to all that trouble…for instance say I want the first part of music to be hot, then I would want to reduce the music.
Are you saying my only option is to use your ‘fade in option’ or the ‘fade out option’ period on the music bed if I want to bring it down so my voice can be heard? If so …‘so be it’ that’s what I’ll do…

Steve I thought I deleted this …can you help me with the box above or subject matter above forget this box …sorry

Dear Steve,
The information below was valuable and thanks…

But…

Well I thought i had it mastered by pulling up one of your fader pots in hopes that as I speak into one track I simple bring the music down ‘MANUALLY’ and then pot back up for a finished product.

The question is my only option of ‘Fade in option’ and ‘Fade out option’ in effects that will MAKE that music pot down so I can talk over it and then mix it down to an MP3 SAMPLE to send out…is that possible …because I potted down the music while I talked the music went down in my headphones …but the music seemed to be the same level not going up or down??

Thanks Paul

I’m no entirely sure what your question is or what you are trying to do, but perhaps the “envelope tool” will help: http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/envelope_tool.html

Before you mix down, use the Normalize effect on both tracks to bring the level up to maximum, then use the Envelope tool to bring the levels down as required. When you have it sounding as you want it to sound, Export as an audio file.
