Need help in muting one midi instrument

I’m on Win 10 with Audacity 2.4.2.

I’ve downloaded a midi track that contains some song I like that I would like to play the string section on my keyboard. In order to do that, I would like to mute or lower the string section and only those instruments so that I can play that part myself. The problem that occurs is that when I mute the string section, I can’t see it anymore. That won’t work because I want to see when my part comes up. How do you do that? The picture I attached shows the string section colored in yellow.

That’s the exact place you would use a MIDI editor/manager/sequencer. After you get the song just the way you like it, then you can get Audacity to play it as a backing track for overdubbing…I think. Audacity has very simple MIDI tools and I’m pretty sure managing a MIDI song components is beyond us.

There used to be a free version of Cakewalk with limited tools and management.
