Mac 10.9.3; Audacity 2.0.5
I’m new to Audacity and my Focusrite Scarlet 2i2. When I connect my 2i2, the computer recognizes it, but it is not showing up in the output or input drop downs to choose it as an option. Help!

If Audacity was open before you connected the Scarlet, you will need to do:
Transport menu > Rescan Audio Devices.
Wait a few moments for the scan to complete, then look again in the device toolbar.
Hi Tracy,
Does the 2i2 appear within Mac system preferences or is not showing here either? Is the green USB light illuminated on the front of the 2i2?
All the best,
Miles
I’m having the same problem. Using an old Macbook Pro with 10.6. The green USB light on the scarlett 2i2 comes on but it does not appear in the drop down list for recording. I’m not a sophisticated user of either mac or the scarlett (just bought both). I tried Transport > Rescan but that didn’t work. Closed and re-opened Audacity but that didn’t work. Any other suggestions? thanks
Do you have OS X 10.6.5 or later which is required Focusrite | Focusrite Downloads?
Have you opened /Applications/Utilities/Audio MIDI Setup, clicked the Input tab, selected the 2i2, then set it to the same sample rate as the Audacity Project Rate (bottom left of Audacity)? Also set the same number of input channels in Audio MIDI as you have set in Audacity.
If you don’t see 2i2 in Audio MIDI Setup, that is what you need to fix.
Make sure you have the latest Audacity 2.1.0 from Audacity ® | Free, open source, cross-platform audio software for multi-track recording and editing..

thanks, upgraded to 2.1. went to Audio Devices and Scarlett doesn’t appear on the Input list of devices. only Built=in Microphone, and Built-in Input
remember I said I was a beginner? I downloaded the software for the Scarlett and now it appears.
Which software was that? Scarlett say (somewhat confusingly) that the “Scarlett 2i2 runs in class-compliant mode on a Mac. No driver is required. Simply plug and play”.
But below that they say “If you have previously installed the Focusrite USB driver”.

I suppose the 2i2, like all other Focusrite interfaces, needs an app (Scarlet MixControl?) to set up the interface. The interface itself is USB Audio compliant and doesn’t need real drivers.
The bigger Focusrites store the settings in the interface (don’t know about the 2i2) and it’ll work without the app. But a new one doesn’t have settings yet…
So a new one is likely to have the “safe” settings of low volume, plain stereo (or maybe mono), default data settings, etc.

Frankly, I don’t know. I’ve only seen older FR and more recently, 18i20 and such. I just suppose it needs it too.
According to the FR website, it runs in class compliant mode on OSX, but needs drivers on Windows. But I believe we might have one user on each platform?
There’s also this:
http://global.focusrite.com/answerbase/using-a-scarlett-interface-on-osx-109-mavericks
On my reading, Focusrite only encourage Scarlett Mix Control for 6i6, 8i6, 18i6, 18i8 and 18i20.

Hi there,
If this is still occurring, it may be an issue with unnecessary drivers blocking the 2i2 from showing up on your Mac. Feel free to drop us an email at supportteam@focusrite.com and we’ll look in to this with you.
To clarify, Scarlett MixControl is only necessary for the 6i6 upwards, as the outputs for the smaller interfaces in the range are not DSP routable, which is essentially the main function of MixControl.
Thanks,
Dan
And if you solve it, do post back and tell us how you did it. This is a forum for sharing, not a help desk.

The ‘driver’ I got was from the Focusrite website. I presumed that was the issue, but now when I tried to use it today again Audacity doesn’t display the 2i2 in the drop down menus, but the lights come on the unit when I plug it in the USB port. Tried Transport > Rescan Audio Devices (not work), closed Audacity/reopened (not work) unplug/replug 2i2 (not work). So maybe it wasn’t the ‘driver’. I’m puzzled now. I hope to get it working soon to record my song so I can make $500,000 next week.
I would uninstall that driver. As far as I can see there are no extra drivers or software required for the 2i2 - so installing a driver not meant for 2i2 may make things worse.
Did you try my previous suggestions?
If you don’t have OS X 10.6.5 or later, upgrade to it.
You can ask Dan for help if you are still stuck (see above).
