Mute individual clips?

Hi, new user to Audacity, am I missing something? (I’ve googled & searched forum). Is there no simple way to MUTE & then later UNMUTE individual audio clips?

(Can anyone explain why? I know I’m new here, but maybe this could be a feature request for Ver 4?)

I just can’t believe there is no MUTE / UNMUTE available at the clip level without bouncing to a separate track or permanently affecting the clip’s future volume. That is a vital process I use all the time when editing, especially when splicing multiple pieces together.

But maybe I’m just missing it. Thanks for any help! -Paul

It’s very rare that I need to do this, but if I did, the way I would do it:

  1. Add a new empty track
  2. Mute the new track
  3. Hold down the “Ctrl” key and drag the clip onto the muted track.

To “unmute”, just hold down the “Ctrl” key and drag it back again.

(Holding down the “Ctrl” key restricts dragging to up/down)
