Multi-track selection

I’ve just updated to the latest version of Audacity.

In the previous version that I was using, I could use shift + s to switch between selecting in just one track by default, and auto-selecting across all tracks whichever track I dragged my selection to cover. Incredibly handy for cutting out a column of audio. Probably my most-used keyboard shortcut with the possible exception of mute.

In the new version this option seems to have vanished. I can use ctrl + shift + k to take an existing selection in one track and extend it across all tracks. But there doesn’t seem to be a way to just do this by default whenever I make a selection.

Can anyone tell me if this function still exists?

ETA: I forgot that it also means when I paste in new audio, all other tracks are auto-shifted to the right. Again, very handy if I want to add audio in the middle of other audio.

Answering my own question, because (of course) I worked it out as soon as I had posted here.

The new word for this[*] is “sync locking”. For some reason there’s no keyboard shortcut for it anymore, but you can add one.

Why was the default keyboard shortcut removed? Who can say.

[*] It’s possible it was always called this.
