I can use Audacity to record and play files as Audacity files, and Audacity appears to export these files as MP3 files, but when I try to play them using Itunes or Windows Media Player, I get only a buzzing noise, like the sound you hear when you test the Tone on Audacity. I’m using Windows 7 and downloaded Audacity as an exe file.

You just missed saying where the music came from. Is this you singing and playing the guitar into a microphone?

What output device do you use to listen to the sounds in Audacity? What output device do the other media players use for their playback? If these are not the same, that could be the source of your problem.
I am recording music from a cassette tape onto my laptop and listening to the results on my laptop. The Audacity file sounds fine on my laptop, but the mp3 file is just a buzzing noise. I’ve never experienced this in listening to other mp3 files on my laptop, and I’ve not attempted to transfer this mp3 file to another device to try to listen to it there.
