MBox 2 mini Windows 8 and Audacity

Greetings … I am using the MBOX2 mini to record onto Audacity 2.0.3. Is it compatible? I am having serious problems … periodically, need to unplug and plug the USB cable in order to make it work. If I do not do that, it is way over modulated.
Thoughts?

The current version of Audacity is 2.0.5 and is available (free) here: Audacity ® | Downloads

USB audio devices can sometimes “lose connection”. My own experience with m-audio USB devices has not been good - frequently encountering this type of annoyance (with any software, not just Audacity, so I doubt that it is a software compatibility issue).

If the device only lost connection temporarily, then you should be able to get Audacity to reconnect to it by selecting “Transport menu > Rescan Audio Devices”.
If the device completely lost connection to the computer then physically disconnecting and reconnecting the USB cable is probably the only solution.

The issue could be driver related, so check that you have the latest drivers from http://www.avid.com
You could also perhaps try connecting the device to a different USB port on the computer to see if that is any better.

MBox and Digi devices are meant for use with Pro Tools LE. Audacity has no explicit support for MBox and Digi.

Avid products meant for ProTools require you to install a specific driver in order to work with software other than ProTools.

According to the Avid site, MBox2 mini is legacy and no longer supported. As far as I can see, the latest driver is from 2011 so would not explicitly support Windows 8. The driver seems to be “Windows Releases 9.0.2.65 Mar 8, 2011 Standalone support (Pro Tools 9 – Pro Tools 11 and other apps)” from http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/download/Mbox-2-Mini-Drivers .

Your issue may be unrelated but just to re-emphasize, Audacity does not support your device. You would probably have most chance of success if you compiled Audacity with ASIO support: Missing features - Audacity Support .
