Audacity gives an error on play when I plug an audio mixer cable into the headphone jack of my current MacBook Pro, but it works ok if I plug headphones into the same jack. When I rescan audio devices I find “external headphones” but play using this provides an error message.
How do I fix this?

What is an “audio mixer cable” - does t have a name, some description, etc? Link to the cable? Instruction manual? What connector does it have (how many contacts)?

It appears that the current MacBook Pro audio output port selects the type of audio output it sends according to what is plugged in.
If low impedance headphones are plugged in, it provides a low impedance analog audio output.
If a high impedance device is plugged in, it can do two things 1. it provides an optical digital audio output, or 2. it provides a high impedance analog audio output.
My audio mixer cable, which had been in use for ten years, has a 3.5mm tip, ring, sleeve plug for the computer and two RCA plugs for the mixer. It doesn’t work with this new macbook.
It appears that Audacity detects the choice Made by the MacBook and tries to match it, but this results in Audacity trying to find a USB audio connection, which there isn’t.
I am currently experimenting with determining the output impedance of the MacBook, so that I can fool it into detecting a set of headphones and providing suitable audio.
